Proven and Highly Efficient Condenser for Pharma Applications
With over 1800 operating worldwide and used by some of the largest and best-known pharmaceutical manufacturers, the Alfa Laval Compabloc is an extremely efficient and compact reactor condenser. This welded-plate unit has a very short vapor path, allowing low pressure drops. It is compact enough to easily fit between the reactor overhead piping and the ceiling for both primary condensing and secondary (vent) condensing services. The Compabloc is available in many metallurgies; the most popular for pharma condensing services are 316 stainless steel and Alloy C-22.
Consisting of square plates that are alternately laser-welded together and placed inside a steel-paneled enclosure (the panels are faced with 316SS or C-22 liners on their wetted sides), the Compabloc is shown below as a single pass condenser (i.e., condensing with little or no inerts present). The vapor (shown in red) enters the top and leaves out the bottom. The cooling fluid is shown, for this example, in four pass flow, entering and leaving through the side panel. Of course, the number of passes for the cooling fluid is determined by computer design. The cooling fluid can, for many applications, be just as easily shown as single pass, in which case it would enter at one side panel and leave at the back side panel.
